What is Jaundice?
Jaundice is caused due to the contamination of food and water. It is a contagious disease. It is a condition in which a person’s skin, sclera, mucus membranes and the whites of the eyes are discoloured yellow due to excess level of bilirubin in the blood resulting from liver disease. The other major symptoms of jaundice are severe itching and lack of sleep. This happens due to the breakdown of red blood cells. Bilirubin is the chemical that remains in the blood after the iron is removed.
Jaundice can be called as a sign rather than a disease because it occurs in different diseases. Due to some diseases like cancer, gallstones or inflammation of bile ducts, the flow of bile or bilirubin from liver to intestines will be decreased causing jaundice. The hyperbilirubinemia subsequently causes increased levels of bilirubin in the extracellular fluid. Concentration of bilirubin in blood plasma does not normally exceed 1 mg/dl. Inflammation of liver reduces the ability of the liver to conjugate which results in the secretion of the bilirubin. The common cause of the jaundice is viral hepatitis which is a liver infection caused by certain viruses.
